First year is early days, but it was around then I decided I wanted to do engineering. Keep up higher level in maths and keep on Science anyway in relation to subjects, as this keeps your options open.

I think a really cool thing to get involved with is CoderDojo (google it if you haven’t heard of it). They are based all across Ireland. It combines software engineering with some hardware for young people to build really cool projects. Really gets you in the mindset for becoming an engineer and creating/designing and solving problems. I would have loved to be involved in something like this when I was in school and I think it gives young people a great head start.

Its just great if you want to be an engineer from first year. I was quiet old when I decided to try engineering. I suggest you try subject like tech drawing for your junior cert. This was one of my favurate subjects in school and helped me in college. Physics is another subject that I recommend doing for your leaving cert. Its a fun subject and it will help you a lot in college.

agree with both answers… I was also still playing with legoo.. technik of course but now there is mindstorm that would allow you to program.

Don’t give up hope! I didn’t get into engineering in college. My leaving cert results weren’t great. So I did my 2nd choice – science. I eventually found my way into engineering and I have no regrets. It took longer than I had initially planned but it was totally worth it. Never give up!
