      Short answer = 12 years
Long answer = although I graduated from my engineering degree 12 years ago, I studied for my PhD for a few more. This was a great learning experience. I then lectured in UCD for a year although I didn’t feel like an engineer proper until I moved to industry. I have been in a pure engineering role for the last 6.5 years.

I graduated in 1996 which makes me an engineer for 16years…. BUT I have only been a chartered professional engineer since 2009. that is when you are recognised by your peers that you have not only the neccessary qualifications but also the real world engineering and management experience to be a professional engineer.
