  The skills you get from learning engineering are invaluable, like logical reasoning, communication, teamwork and looking at problems & solving them analytically. These skills can take you anywhere. I have one friend who went into art and drama after Engineering and I know a lot of other people who work in finance and economics. Being an engineer doesn’t mean that you have to stay an engineer.
  
  That said, you can always start you own company. Look at all the new start up companies from WebSummit. Many of them are engineers.

  Great answer from Laura – I agree, engineering gives you a great skill-set to go on to any type of job if you wish. In my last job I had a lot of other non-engineering responsibilities as well including operations, IT – even some sales, finance and marketing.

  Only joking. Engineering gives you many what we call transferable skills. That means you can work in plenty other sectors.. Same is true for other businesses. Our business development manger came from pharmaceuticals and she transferred quickly and does a great job

  I’m a mechanical engineer working on projects that are mostly civil engineering. My degree has given me skills like logical thinking that have enabled me to move from mechanical engineering to the management position I have today.
